At the time of his death in 1987, Andy Warhol was the most famous artist in America. But in the 1950s and early ’60s, he was best known as a commercial illustrator and had yet to make his mark in the art world. That all changed in 1962 when he painted his iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans—thirty two nearly identical canvases, one for each soup flavor the Campbell Soup Company then sold.
